When You Feel Distant From God: 3 Steps to Reclaim Your Walk

We’ve all been there. You wake up, go through the motions of your daily routine, but inside, you are feeling distant from God. Your prayers feel like whispers in the wind, your Bible sits unopened, and that vibrant connection you once had with the Lord feels replaced by a stagnant fog.

If you are stuck in a season of spiritual dryness, you aren’t alone. But how do you break through the complacency? The answer isn’t a quick fix or a religious “check-list.” It begins with a realization that hits us with the force of a tidal wave: Our relationship with Jesus is an intentional, personal choice.

The “Hell” of Passive Living

We like to think of our faith as something we “have,” but Jesus calls us to something we do. If heaven is defined by a loving, thriving, intimate relationship with God, then the opposite—separation from Him—is simply the result of choosing to live life apart from the Vine.

As Jesus tells us in John 15:5, “Apart from me, you can do nothing.” He doesn’t say you’ll work a little harder or take a little longer; He says we can do nothing apart from Jesus. We often treat our faith as a background app on our phones, but if we don’t see the value in the relationship, we won’t spend the time or energy to develop it.

Ask yourself: Are you “not that into” Jesus? Because a man or woman who loves someone will move mountains to keep them. Are you willing to move mountains to nurture your relationship with the Creator?

Stop “Spiritual Storytelling”

Much of our spiritual stagnation happens because we are master storytellers. We spin comforting narratives in our heads about how we are doing “just fine” as believers, while our actions tell a radically different story.

We claim to prioritize our faith, but a quick look at our daily calendars reveals we are often worshiping at the altars of comfort and entertainment. Your actions are a mirror. As the saying goes, “I’m sorry, I can’t hear what you’re saying; your actions are screaming too loudly.”

  • The Audit: Take an objective inventory of your days. What do you talk about most? What takes up your free time? If you notice a topic coming up repeatedly in conversation, that is your heart’s current focus.

Presence Over Performance

Authentic love defies imitation. You cannot fake intimacy with Jesus, and you cannot force it. The most beautiful part of this journey is that Jesus wants to be known voluntarily. He is guiding us toward heaven because He desires us to be there even more than we desire to be there ourselves.

When we learn to look at the “waves”—those painful, difficult, or unexpected trials—as opportunities to get closer to Jesus, we grow. It is in those moments of adaptation and testing that the clarity of the Gospel truly opens up.

3 Practical Steps to Reclaim Your Walk

Practice Radical Observation When You Feel Distant: Watch your own behavior without judging it. If you find your thoughts drifting toward worldly anxieties, recognize them as “clues” that your treasure is currently tied to earth, not heaven.

Look for Repetition in the Quiet Fog : When you hear a whisper of an idea or a verse repeatedly, pay attention. That is how the Holy Spirit reveals Himself to you personally.

Put Him at the Center to Reclaim Your Walk: As Matthew Kelly notes, the only sane response to knowing Jesus is to put Him at the center of your life. When you do, the fog of life begins to clear.
